THE ARTIST
Caroline
Duncan-Starmann
Contemporary mixed-media artist exploring female identity, emotional truth and authenticity.
I paint women not as they are expected to be, but as they feel.
My work begins where explanation ends. I am interested in the emotional layers women carry beneath composure — strength, vulnerability, intuition, contradiction, memory and change.
Each portrait becomes a space between what is visible and what is felt.
The face is only the beginning.
I am drawn to women’s faces because they hold so much without needing to explain anything.
A look can carry resilience, uncertainty, self-belief, longing, softness, resistance or transformation. I do not try to paint perfection. I try to paint presence.
The women in my work are not portraits of a single person. They are emotional figures — fragments of experience, identity and inner truth.
Built in layers.
Oil
Depth, softness and emotional weight.
Acrylic
Energy, immediacy and bold colour.
Vinyl
Contrast, structure and graphic tension.
Texture
Layers that make emotion physically visible.
Emotion leaves traces.
I let them remain visible.
A woman does not become powerful by becoming less sensitive.
She becomes powerful when she stops believing that sensitivity needs to be hidden.
